MINI MALS
A clouded, blanket term these days it would seem. Kind of like the using of the word “mid length” to basically describe anything that isn’t a shortboard thruster or a longboard.
A true mini mal is what it sounds like it is, the best parts about a malibu/longboard (stability, fantastic paddling ability etc) and the best parts about a performance based shortboard (manoeuvrability, ease of duck diving/getting in and around pitching waves)
These boards were our bread and butter throughout the 90’s, when surfboards ranged from wafer thin thrusters to performance orientated longboards, there wasn’t much else in between. Obviously certain circles and surfing communities had their share of alternative designs even before that was a thing, but for the most part there were 3 designs you would find within a “surf shop”.
This particular version is a remake of a 1990's Bear Surfboards shape we did a heap of. Someone had found an old, unwanted one at the tip and we went about replicating it. We had the exact same Burford 7'4" mini mal blank upstairs, and Hutcho even had the full template buried deep in his stash in his shaping bay. An easy task with the 2 of those. Has a touch more rocker than most "easy to surf" mini mals of the era, this just means that it has a much better high end than most and can really handle the waves when they start pumping. A perfect travel board that will handle any waves you come across on your travels, or that 1 board to have in the car so you can surf no matter what the waves are doing.
LAYUP: 1 x 6oz bottom with fin patch, 1 x 6oz and 1 x 4oz deck.
